Historic Walking Tour of Edgartown

Begin at the Carnegie Heritage Center with a guided introduction to the Living Landmarks exhibition, then step into Edgartown’s historic streets with one of our spirited educators to explore the Island’s rich whaling and maritime history. Enjoy special access to the Norton Boat House and visit the Revolutionary War exhibition at the Vincent House Museum—the Island’s oldest house—before concluding beneath the soaring murals of the Old Whaling Church.

Independence On Foot

Curator Norah Van Riper welcomes you to the Vincent House Museum for an introduction to Martha’s Vineyard: Then, Now & Forever, an exhibition exploring the Island’s journey through 250 years of American history. Then trace the footsteps of the Island’s Revolutionary families through the streets of historic Edgartown, discovering the stories of the Smith, Thaxter, and Cooke families and the people and places that shaped Martha’s Vineyard during the American Revolution.

Tour includes FREE Vincent House museum entry. Please arrive 15 minutes early to enjoy the exhibit before you step off.

This shorter, easier-paced experience offers a behind-the-scenes look at the Vineyard Preservation Trust’s historic campus. Beginning at the Old Whaling Church, visit three of the Trust’s most treasured landmarks—the Dr. Daniel Fisher House, the Vincent House Museum, and the Old Whaling Church. Along the way, discover the stories and preservation efforts that keep these remarkable places alive for future generations.

A Peek Inside the Old Whaling Church

Begin at the Carnegie Heritage Center’s special exhibition exploring the artistic process behind the Old Whaling Church’s celebrated trompe l’oeil murals by Island muralist Margot Datz. Then step inside one of Martha’s Vineyard’s most iconic landmarks to experience the soaring murals firsthand while discovering the church’s remarkable history, architecture, and continuing role as a cherished community gathering place.
